JaikuEngine is now open source!

Yesterday, we flipped the switch and moved Jaiku to App Engine. Today, we are open sourcing the Jaiku code base under the Apache License 2.0. The code is available as JaikuEngine on Google Code Project Hosting as of now. Anyone can set up and run their own JaikuEngine instance on Google App Engine.

So, developers, start your JaikuEngines. As Google will no longer be actively developing jaiku.com, the future of Jaiku is in your hands. Point your browser to the project and join the jaikuengine-discuss group to learn more and get started.

As a 20% project, Mika has open sourced the Jaiku Mobile client (dual-licensed MIT and GPLv2). Users of the client may have noted already that the current build will no longer connect to the server now that Jaiku is hosted on App Engine. We'll let you know when the new build is ready for download!

This is a good&bad news.

Since I answer and ask dumb questions for a living, let me confirm: you're saying that Jaiku will continue running just fine, but Google employees will no longer get paid to develop it. If so, that's not too bad. Google employees aren't the only Python developers in the world.

Jaiku has been a 20% project for most of the original team who joined Google since the acquisition. Now that the code is open, other people have the opportunity to influence & contribute to the project.

My personal opinion is that it would not be a bad goal to get to a state where it's easy to export and import your data (including your social graph) from one Jaiku Engine instance to another.

It's exciting to see where the community takes this.

While I'm definitely a fan of the entire microblogging "thing", I find it hilarious that in 2009 we treat it as the best thing since sliced strings. 1989, sure....

LInks in this page are broken: http://api.jaiku.com/docs

Which is the correct url that contains the api key?

Thanks.

http://www.jaiku.com/api/keys - the old http://api.jaiku.com subdomain no longer works _reliably_, use http://www.jaiku.com/api, and you should be in business

Is there any way of finding out how jaiku.com will scale? i.e. will it allow/handle a large number of users, maybe 10,000?

Facebook has a max of 5000 friends limit.

It won’t be wrong to say that the IT sector has made the world stand up and take notice of the countries like India. India’s IT poweress is one reason why such massive deals like the Tata Chorus deal and the Hindalco Novelis deal could get shape and turn into India’s favor. Had it not been for the IT sector, there were chances that these multi million dollar deals would not have matured the way they have. http://www.infysolutions.com/resources/resources.html
